This essay focuses on the biography of Britannicus, son of Claudius and Valeria Messalina, considering particularly the information transmitted by Tacitus in the Annales. Tacitus’ work is also the only source that realizes that Britannicus would have been sexually assaulted by Nero, his brother by adoption, brother-in-law and rival as far as power was concerned. Thus, we also intend to analyse the reference to the stuprum of the young prince and its meaning within the historiography of Tacitus.

Herodotus is the epochal authority who inaugurated the European and Western consciousness of collective identity, whether in an awareness of other societies and of the nature of cultural variation itself or in the fashioning of Greek self-awareness-and necessarily that of later civilizations influenced by the ancient Greeks-which was perpetually in dialogue and tension with other ways of living in groups. In this book, 14 contributors explore ethnicity-the very self-understanding of belonging to a separate body of human beings-and how it evolves and consolidates (or ethnogenesis). This inquiry is focussed through the lens of Herodotus as our earliest master of ethnography, in this instance not only as the stylized portrayal of other societies, but also as an exegesis on how ethnocultural differentiation may affect the lives, and even the very existence, of one's own people. Ethnicity and Identity in Herodotus is one facet of a project that intends to bring Portuguese and English-speaking scholars of antiquity into closer cooperation. It has united a cross-section of North American classicists with a distinguished cohort of Portuguese and Brazilian experts on Greek literature and history writing in English.

Despite being one of the issues often cited by philologists to discuss topics within the Homeric poems, the fact is this is a complex and non-consensual issue. Discussions begin on the fact that (the) poet(s) do not always use the same formula or word to translate the idea we usually translate as «destiny». This essay aims to make a state of the art, drawing attention to what we consider to be a common methodological error: the forced adaptation of what Greeks understood by moira, e.g., and what in the XXI century is meant by Destiny.

In Greek Art, Greek warriors were often depicted naked, using only essential weapons for their defence and attack. This paper's aim is to study the relationship between male nudity, as it is encountered in some Greek Art, and the representations of Greek naked warriors, trying to understand the reason why Greek artists have chosen to depict those men in such form, since at the same time they are also depicted in situations of great physical vulnerability.

Although Aeneas has not yet received the same attention as other classical heroes from film directors, particularly those from Hollywood, he has been the object of cinematic representation. Interestingly, it was the Italian cinema that showed greater interest in the hero of the Aeneid. This essay intends to reexamine some previous research on this topic and to analyse and outline the guidelines that film directors, such as G. Ferroni, G. Venturini and F. Rossi, followed in order to retell the myth of the Virgilian hero. We, thus, seek to provide further information on the reception of this theme in contemporary culture.

Abstract This paper proposes a re-reading of the scene of Stanley Kubrick's film Spartacus (1960), in which all the vanquished slaves self-identify as the mentor of the rebellion, considering the hypothesis that the director and/or the scriptwriter had taken inspiration from the 1618 Spanish play Fuenteovejuna by Lope de Vega to write it.

The idea of “vacuum” seems to have been present in Greek culture almost from the its beginning. Indeed, if we look at the fact that the Homeric Poems and the work attributed to Hesiod are the earliest known literary testimonies of the Greeks' culture, then it seems to us more than evident that the ideas of "chaos" and disorder or ataxia have been the subject of reflection by poets since at least the eighth century BC. This essay aims to analyze three cases of the Greek mythology in which these ideas seem the basic theme that structures them: the myths of Gigantomachy, Centauromachy and Amazonomachy.

Abstract In Book XXII of The Iliad, the Poet describes the ultimate battle between Achilles and Hector. Zeus had thus decided to weigh the Fates (defined as Ker, a Greek word which also means «heart») of both heroes, so as to determine who would triumph. Hector's Ker proved to be heavier and, therefore, he must die. This theme of the weighing of the Fates was later echoed in Aeschylus' lost tragedy, Memnon. But here, the Fates became souls and the motif was then called Psykhostasia. Therefore, we propose the term Kerostasia, or Cerostasia, for the first case. However, the theme of Kerostasia has a counterpart in Egyptian culture: the weighing of the heart by Anubis, as the Egyptian Book of the Dead shows us. Taking this into account as well as the fact that, in Greek mythology, Memnon is Ethiopian, this study seeks to trace a hypothetical genealogy of the Homeric theme of balancing the scales of Fate.

This second volume includes the Lives of Pertinax, Didius Julianus,
Septimius Severus, Pescenius Niger, Clodius Albinus, Caracala, Geta,
Macrinus, Didadumnus and Heliogabalus. Thus, taking into account
Pertinax’s accession to the imperial throne and Heliogabalus’ death, the
volume covers the period of Rome’s history from 192 to 222 AD. If we
take into account the birth of Pertinax (A.D. 122), the time covered by
this set of lives is therefore about a century. The period covered by the
lives gathered here coincides with that of the establishment of the Severan dinasty, which followed that of the Antonines, emperors that marked at various levels the Roman imperial apogee. Of all the biographies gathered in this volume, that of Heliogabalus should be, by the wealth of descriptions, the one that best corresponds to a certain contemporary - though not necessarily factual - imaginary of Ancient Rome: a civilisation marked by excess, exoticism, cruelty and perversion.
