In order to reduce the polluting effect of sludge from drinking water plants, we looked to incorporate the sludge in cement mortars and concrete. The study is divided into four stages: 1. Sampling and physical-chemical and microbiological characterization, 2. Characterization analysis and design of concrete and mortar mixtures based on sludges, 3. Preparation of cylinders (concrete) and cubes (mortars), 4. Mechanical and financial assessment of test results regarding resistance of compressive strength for concrete and mortar. According to tests the mixtures that gave the best results are the ones of 60% cement and 40% sludge with a resistance of 2515/3000 psi [17/21 MPa] for concrete, and 75% cement and 25% sludge with a resistance of 2662/3500 psi [18/24 MPa] for mortars. The savings in the production of concrete and mortar correspond to 17% and 39% respectively.

Durante el proceso de potabilización del agua en las plantas de tratamiento se generan lodos como un residuo inevitable, los cuales son vertidos directamente a los cuerpos de agua superficial, causando un efecto negativo sobre la vida acuática. La legislación colombiana, en el decreto 3930 de 2010, regula este tipo de residuo y prohíbe disponerlo en aguas superficiales. Debido a que las cantidades acumuladas de lodos son altas, se realizó una investigación acerca de su posible aplicación como constituyentes de morteros hidráulicos con el propósito de mitigar su impacto en el ambiente y darles un valor agregado. El objetivo de este trabajo fue estudiar la influencia del tipo de lodo, de la composición y edades de los morteros hidráulicos sobre la resistencia a la compresión. Se utilizaron dos tipos de lodos, con diferentes características fisicoquímica y microbiológica, los cuales fueron suministrados por dos industrias de la Región Norte de Colombia. El desarrollo de la investigación se llevó a cabo en 5 etapas: 1. Toma de muestras y secado de lodos; 2. Caracterizaciones fisicoquímica y microbiológica de los lodos; 3. Macerado y tamizado de lodos deshidratados; 4. Elaboración de los cubos de mortero (por triplicado), curado (7, 14 y 28 días) y prueba de resistencia a la compresión; y, 5. Tratamiento estadístico de los datos e interpretación. De acuerdo con los ensayos realizados, la relación 0.5:1 en peso de lodo seco: cemento (L:C) utilizando el lodo del acueducto de la industria B, fue el que presentó el mejor comportamiento mecánico, con una resistencia de 11,5±0.2 MPa a los 28 días, cabe anotar que la cantidad del agregado fino en las diferentes relaciones se mantuvo constante en relación a la cantidad L:C. El análisis de costo estimado en la producción de los morteros mostró un ahorro en inversión correspondiente a un 44%. Finalmente, los compuestos químicos presentes en los lodos que posiblemente tuvieron mayor incidencia sobre la resistencia de los morteros correspondieron al Ca, Al y Mg.

Con el propósito de mitigar el impacto ambiental causado por el vertimiento de los lodos que se generan en los procesos de potabilización de agua, se buscó su aprovechamiento en la elaboración de materiales de construcción.  En este trabajo se determinaron las concentraciones de los óxidos en dos tipos de lodos provenientes de plantas de tratamiento de agua potable (PTAP), y se compararon con las concentraciones de los mismos en el cemento tipo portland, esto con el fin de evaluar la incidencia de las concentraciones de los óxidos en la resistencia a la compresión de materiales modificados. Se seleccionaron estos lodos debido a una investigación previa, en la cual se determinó el potencial de aprovechamiento que tienen como materia prima para la fabricación de morteros, las resistencias obtenidas oscilaron entre 566 ± 29 psi y 1668 ± 29 psi.
El desarrollo de la investigación se llevó a cabo en cuatro etapas: 1. Toma de muestras y secado de lodos. 2. Análisis por fluorescencia de rayos X (FRX), a las muestras de los dos tipos de lodos y el cemento. 3. Análisis estadístico de los resultados obtenidos, mediante una prueba t, para la diferencia de medias. 4. Discusión de los resultados.
Se concluye que estadísticamente existe una diferencia significativa en las concentraciones de CaO, SiO2 y Al2O3 de los lodos y el cemento tipo portland.

Concrete is the most used building material worldwide, involving thousands of field, academic and laboratory professionals in its production, transportation and its application, which creates a great margin of possible error that may yield in a poor quality concrete. Each professional takes care of the concrete quality according to
his/her experience or academic knowledge/expertise. In order to analyze the factors that concrete workers in Barranquilla (Colombia) perceive as the most important
for achieving a high-quality concrete, a survey was made to both academic and field experts with different years of experience and analytic hierarchy process (AHP)
was applied to weigh the perception of each factor in the concrete quality. Results have shown that for the survey respondents one of the most important factors is the environment; this may be associated with geographic location of the city, which is in a coastal region.

This paper presents the analysis of the degradation condition of secondary schools built between 1970 and 1990, in Portugal. The analysis is based on 15 case studies, mainly composed of several independent pavilions and typo­logically defined as “pavilion schools”. The analysis of the data on the constructive defects, identified in detailed surveys of the case studies and registered in technical reports, involves the implementation of a suitable methodology. The meth­odology is based on the creation of a database where the contents of the survey reports can be gathered and organized. The system allows obtaining statistical results on the degradation condition of the case studies. The statistical analysis shows that the pathological condition of the buildings is a matter of great concern, considering the significant number of defects diagnosed. SUMMARY This paper presents a potential flow solution for online estimation of hydrodynamic interaction between ships moving in restricted waters with complex boundaries. Each ship in concern is linked with a moving patch representing the arbitrary bathymetry beneath it. The wetted surfaces of ship hulls are meshed and loaded prior to the simulation, while the moving patches are dynamically discretized by a fast and robust mesh generator. The proposed method is validated for the ship-ship interaction case in the shallow water case with a flat and horizontal seabed where the mirror image technique is applicable, and satisfactory agreement is obtained. The method is further applied to simulate two interaction scenarios involving arbitrary seabed topography, and the numerical results are obtained and discussed.

ABSTRACT Natural non-renewable resources, such as minerals, are becoming increasingly depleted against a backdrop of intense industrialisation. Through the exergy analysis and thermoeconomic tools it is possible to assign a figure to the degree of depletion. This is because the exergy replacement cost represents the effort needed by humankind to return minerals to their original conditions from the “commercially dead state”, Thanatia. The authors undertake an evaluation of the ten most significantly produced minerals in Colombia, since 1990. Via the 2011 mineral balance, this paper shows that the highest exergetic losses are in the extraction for export and not national consumption rates. The loss in mineral wealth, quantified in exergy terms for 2011 is 119.2 Mtoe (4.99×109 GJ) and has, since 1990, accumulated to 1,543.4 Mtoe (6.46×1010 GJ). In converting these losses into economic terms, it becomes clear that the nation must re-think its mineral export strategy, if it is develop sustainably.
