In this chapter we attempt to demonstrate that, during the reigns of Kings João I,
Duarte and Afonso V of Portugal, the sovereign did not rule alone but, as Theresa Earenfight
has recently suggested, the queen and the infantes (the king’s brothers, sisters, sons and daughters)
shared his dignity and played very important roles in the monarchic government
when adults. In fact, King Duarte resorted to his brothers and nephews when he needed
counselling in political and military matters but he also gave credit to his wife, whom he had
in his highest moral and intellectual esteem. When, facing an unexpected death, he had to
decide who would govern the realm and educate his six-years-old son and heir Afonso until
he would come of age, he chose Queen Leonor instead of any of his brothers, thus showing he
considered her a true political partner, capable of taking his place when necessary.
